WHAT MAKES THIS AREA UNIQUE?
Home of the Roan High Knob Shelter at over 6,000'--the most elevated shelter along the Appalachian Trail, the Roan Highlands are home to the longest stretch of grassy bald on the Appalachian Trail, as well as the largest natural rhododendron garden in the world! Spring and fall are both spectacular times of year to visit! No need to stop at an overlook to enjoy the view, because on these grassy balds you'll be treated to a panoramic view as you hike. Ease of accessibility and clear trail markings make this area a great no-hassle choice for a weekend adventure.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE: deciduous and evergreen forest, grassy bald, rhododendron, whitetail deer, black bear, wild pig, owl, coyote.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Early June for peak rhododendron bloom, or mid-September to mid-October for peak fall foliage.

ROAN HIGH KNOB WEEKEND ITINERARY: 21.6 MILES TOTAL
Day 1
Park at Bear Branch Road. Get a shuttle to Hughes Gap, TN 1130
Hike 3 miles to campsite at Ash Gap (unreliable water source).
Day 2
Hike 10.8 miles to camp on Little Hump Mountain (spectacular view, but no water source).
OR
Hike 15.4 miles to camp at Doll Flats.
Day 3
Hike remaining miles to your car at Bear Branch Road.
